The course was is beautiful condition and the weather was fitting of the occasion. For the first time the Seniors (60 and over) held their own competition of 18 holes alongside the main 36 hole competition. This meant that entries were at the highest for as long as anyone could remember and starter Ken Bell needed to be up early to get the first players off at 7.45am.

For me, winning this competition provides the toughest physical and mental test. Bringing your A game when it really matters normally requires a combination of skill, form, mental strength and a bit of luck. Having been in attendance from start to finish it was clear to me how much winning these trophies means to our Members.

It was a superb day and a big thanks should go to Ken Bell for sending off all 79 entries and to Pete Brickell for all the organising and scoring. A special mention should also go to Richard Gibbs who’s idea it was to run a separate 60+ Championship and to John Bentley, Pete and Mike Allen for making it happen in such a short time.

Below is a summary of the results and pictures of the winners, trophies, Greens Chair, first off at 7.45am, and the first entries of the 60+ event;

60 and over Championship

This splendid new trophy was particularly keenly contested. At one point there were 4 tied on 64 in the Clubhouse, and then Paul Wharton carded a 63. He had an excruciating wait until the final player in the final group birdied the 17th and parred the 18th to record a 61. There is no one I know at HCGC better than Mike Allen who is able to bring his A game when it really matters. Many congratulations to him and all other runners up.

1st Mike Allen 61
2nd Paul Wharton 63
3rd Richard Harris 64
3rd Laurence Flanagan 64
3rd Philip Donkin 64
3rd Steve Johnstone 64

Club Championship (Handicap)

A big well done to Simon who also won last years’ s Scratch Competition. Playing within your handicap twice takes some doing! A special mention should go to Tom and Pete who also made great scores on the day. The pictures of Simon posted on FB showed just how much this victory meant to him.

1st Simon Watson 63 + 58 = 121
2nd Tom Riley 60 + 64 = 124
3rd Pete Jordan 65 + 61 = 126

Club Championship (Scratch)

So the title of the best golfer of the year goes to Jack Smith. This is all the more special as Jack plays football at semi-professional level and has limited time to devote to golf. Congratulations to him and all those who featured in the results. This year you are the best golfers at HCGC!

1st Jack Smith 69 + 68 = 137
2nd John Milne 68 + 70 = 138
3rd Simon Watson 72 + 67 = 139
